A WAP (Wireless  Access Point) is a device that allows for wireless devices to connect to a wired network using a wireless internet connection. WAP are normally combined within modems and routers, although can still be used as a standalone device in which they are wired to the router. In larger networks the WAP’s are spread around so it physically makes the entire network have the ability to connect wirelessly. This is useful in large companies so make sure no matter where in the building you are, your still connected wirelessly. WAP are often password protected and only accept specific MAC addresses.

WAP’s are used in most networks, either as a single entity or combined within a router. They can be used exclusively or be combined with a wired network. WAP are limited by the fact that they are slower than the default wired connection and there can be interference from other wireless networks nearby, this can be a big problem in cities as there are many WiFi networks. There is also a limited amount of frequencies and this can cause overlapping.

WAP’s are essential to networks and are likely to take over wired networks if they can be improved to be more effective. They are cheaper and take up less space than fixed wired networks, as well as being more secure.
